Mission Statement
The mission of the Homewood City Schools is to educate and empower every student to reach his or her unique potential.

Who We Are
Homewood City Schools is a system enriched by tradition, community spirit, and vision.  Our mission is ensured by a dedicated and exemplary staff, a supportive and involved community, the recognition and celebration of diversity, an optimal use of resources, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence.

Strategic Principles

Strategy I - We will produce 21st century learners through a curriculum that promotes problem solving skills and creativity to prepare citizens who will contribute to an integrated global society.

Communication: Invest in strengthening students’ communication skills to foster professionalism and collaboration with others

 

Plan 2

Collaboration: Ensure students and teachers have opportunities for collaborative work to strengthen interpersonal skills

 

Plan 3

Creativity: Inspire creativity and innovation in teaching and learning across content areas, learning targets, and grade levels

 

Plan 4

Critical Thinking: Assess current and developing curriculum (Learning Targets) to insure many opportunities for critical thinking across grade levels and disciplines

 

Plan 5

Civic Engagement: Develop programs to motivate students to engage in their community, accept personal ownership, and to understand their relevance in a global society

 

Plan 6

Cultural Awareness: Provide students and teachers the access to a variety of learning opportunities which promote cultural and global awareness and understanding in an ever-changing world

 

Plan 7

Conservation: Promote a positive attitude towards the environment we work and live within to encourage good stewardship of our human and natural resources.

 

Strategy II - We will develop flexible instructional formats that remove barriers and allow diverse learners to achieve targeted learning that assures attainment of each learner’s full potential.

 

Plan 1

Provide flexibility in scheduling to include a variety of instructional formats that will support the needs and goals of diverse learners

 

Plan 2

Enhance tutoring programs that utilize qualified tutors to provide effective instruction

 

Plan 3

Prepare students for career success in a diverse and technologically-rich society

 

Plan 4

Provide course opportunities for students that focus on post-secondary interests and aptitudes

 

Plan 5

Ensure that students, parents, and members of the community understand the need for and development of learning targets

 

Plan 6

Use authentic assessments and performance-based activities to assess progress towards learning targets

 

Plan 7

Adopt standard grading systems at each school level that reflect progress towards mastery of learning targets and evaluate process criteria

 

Plan 8

Generate a standards-based report card for the school district, beginning at the elementary level, which reports levels of progress towards mastery of the learning targets and process criteria

 

Strategy III - We will ensure that teaching and learning drive technology implementation and innovation.

Plan 1

Ensure seamless, ubiquitous, open access for student use of personal or school devices both during the school day and after school hours

 

Plan 2

Empower students and teachers to be responsible digital citizens who can compete globally in an ever advancing technological society

 

Plan 3

Ensure that teachers and administrators participate in appropriate, expedient, and comprehensive technology training

 

Plan 4

Allow instructional staff to make responsible decisions regarding appropriate technology.

 

Plan 5

Examine, update and expand HCS policies and procedures as they relate to technology on a regular basis, ensuring that teaching and learning remain at the forefront

 

Strategy IV - We will guarantee learning spaces and facilities equipped with state-of-the-art resources, structures, and tools.

Provide students and educational stakeholders with a centralized multi-purpose facility to expand and enhance educational development and the mission of the district

Ensure all facilities are provided with technologically-advanced tools that promote 21st Century Learning Skills

Strive for demographically similar attendance configurations for the elementary schools that provide a mixture of students and a balance of enrollment numbers


Strategy V - We will establish and maintain new and existing tools to enhance communication and information flow.

 

Plan 1

Develop dynamic and engaging websites that offer interactive sources of information that can be exchanged quickly and easily to ensure effective communication with faculty, staff, parents, students, and the community

 

Plan 2

Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of registration

 

Plan 3

Encourage and support the collaboration of ideas, resources, and training materials through the use of state of the art technology

 

Strategy VI - We will provide wellness and growth opportunities that will enable students, staff, and families to achieve their personal best.

 

Plan 1

Create a wellness program worthy of serving as a model for school systems across the nation

 

Plan 2

Implement and practice the principles of proper nutrition for students, employees, and parents which will result in life-long healthy food choices

 

Plan 3

Create an environment that promotes and supports emotional wellness for students, employees, and parents

 

Plan 4

Implement a program to promote healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices for employees by providing opportunities for individual health assessments

 

Plan 5

Design a framework that maximizes professional learning, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous improvement

Determine the feasibility of an innovative childcare program
