    The Homewood City Schools (HCS) Board of Education is overseeing the work of its consultants with Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates as the Board moves toward the appointment of its next superintendent. The Board has established the following revised timeline for the Selection Phase of the search: 

    July 13, 2020 Board Workshop on Interview Preparation 
    July 15, 2020 First Round Interviews 
    July 16, 2020 First Round Interviews 
    July 27, 2020 Second Round Interview 
    July 28, 2020 Second Round Interview 
    July 29, 2020 Second Round Interview 
    August 3-7, 2020 Due Diligence on Final Candidates 
    August 11, 2020 Board Appoints Superintendent 

    May 22, 2020 UPDATE

    To ensure the best Superintendent is selected for Homewood City Schools, the Homewood City Schools (HCS) Board of Education has selected Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates (HYA) to assist in the hiring of a new Superintendent.

    The HCS Board of Education selected HYA to provide a thorough search process. As a first step in that process, the Board of Education met with the consultants on March 10th and planned all the steps to be taken in the search for a new superintendent. Two days after that meeting, the Covid-19 Pandemic substantially impacted all of our lives and the Board put some things on hold. Dr. Cleveland graciously offered to delay his retirement until the schools got through Covid-19 Pandemic and its effects.

    Since then the HYA consultants carried out individual interviews with five Board members and meetings with individuals and groups identified by the Board in interview, focus group or community input settings on March 18-19 and May 11-12. In addition, an online survey was conducted by HYA using the Homewood City Schools website from April 9th through May 13th.

    The meetings, interviews, focus groups, and survey were structured to gather data to assist the Board in determining the primary qualities it might seek in its next Superintendent. Through this process, the consultants attempted to identify the personal and professional qualities desired in the Superintendent, as well as the skill sets necessary to build upon what stakeholder groups valued, while addressing current and emerging issues which the schools might be facing. It is anticipated that this data also will be useful to candidates interested in the Homewood City Schools superintendency, as well as to the new Superintendent, once the individual is selected for the position.

    There were 629 people who responded to the survey either online or by hard copy. Additionally, 71 people participated in individual or group conversations with the consultants. The consultants presented a draft profile of desired characteristics to the Board at its meeting of May 19, 2020. The draft profile was made up of attributes, expertise and style traits mentioned most frequently by the people who participated in the individual and group discussions. The draft profile also incorporated eight of the most frequently mentioned items from the online survey, which in most cases were the same as those most frequently selected items by Board members.
