    Homewood Families,

As this is an unprecedented time in our city and nation, Homewood City Schools has remained focused on the safety and health of our students, staff, and community. New information is unfolding daily regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. Over the last several weeks, Homewood City Schools’ leadership team has been preparing for a number of possibilities.  Please read the information below for the latest system updates:

School Closure and eLearning: Homewood City Schools will remain closed until Monday, April 6. There are no mandatory activities or assignments during our school closure now through April 6. Many teachers are providing optional resources for enrichment for students and families, but again these activities are not required during the school closure. While we are tentatively scheduled to reopen on April 6, we will be reassessing the situation over the break. Homewood City Schools will continue to prepare for eLearning should it become necessary later in the semester.  If there are any changes to the re-opening date, those details will be communicated through email to parents and posted on the district’s website under Covid-19 Updates.

AP: The AP program is developing resources to help schools support student learning amid closures and is devising a solution that would allow at-home testing in May. More information will be posted on the AP website by March 20.

Child Nutrition Program: During the school closure, Homewood City Schools will be serving meals to children ages 18 or younger Monday–Friday at Homewood Middle School between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. During Spring Break (March 23-27), HCS will be distributing meals on Monday, March 23, and Wednesday, March 25. Two breakfast and lunch meals will be given on March 23, and two breakfast and three lunch meals will be distributed on March 25.  Please drive-thru the carpool line in the front of the school. Homewood Middle School is located at 395 Mecca Ave.

Social Distancing: We encourage our families to continue following the guidance of public health officials during the school closure. Please remember that even though students are out of school, it is important to minimize interactions with large groups, maintain social distancing, and focus on handwashing and other measures that help stop the spread of germs. Several resources are located on the district’s Covid- 19 Updates website.

Talking to Your Children About Coronavirus: As public conversations around the Coronavirus increase, children may worry about themselves, their family, and friends. Parents and family members can play an important role in helping children make sense of what they hear in a way that is honest, accurate, and minimizes anxiety or fear. Updates: We are committed to keeping our families and staff informed. We encourage you to continue following the guidance of public health officials during the closure, and monitor your phone, email, HCS app, and the Homewood City Schools website for future messages from the school system.

Take care of each other, enjoy time with your family, and please know that our hearts are with our students, staff, and community as we navigate this difficult situation.
