Graduation is supposed to be a day for your family and friends to join together to celebrate a milestone event for your child. We understand the desire for a traditional graduation ceremony. However, we are mindful of the potential impact a large gathering of students and families could have on our community. We understand that we have several parents and a few students who have conditions that do not allow them to be around large groups at this time.
This is a disappointing way to end the year for our students and families and especially for the Class of 2020. We know we cannot give our seniors back what they lost in the school closure, but we want to honor and celebrate this resilient class by providing a safe and memorable celebration for all of our students.
We are pleased to announce that we have been given clearance by the Jefferson County Department of Health to host a modified graduation event for the Class of 2020 to help ensure the safety of our students, families, and faculty and staff. Please carefully read the information below.
Homewood High School will hold commencement exercises for the Class of 2020 in the auditorium at Homewood High School. The modified graduation event will occur during the week of May 18-22, 2020. A sign-up genius has been created for graduates and their family members to select a date and time for their individual graduation ceremony (CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP), during which graduates will have their names called, will walk across the auditorium stage, and will receive their diplomas. This virtual graduation ceremony will be recorded by Knight Eady Event Group and will be shared with all families. Participation in this event is not mandatory, and those who do not wish to participate should email Dayna Neece (firstname.lastname@example.org) to make arrangements for picking up their diplomas and returning their caps and gowns.
Cap and gown distribution will take place on Friday, May 15, 2020, following the schedule below. As students drive through the main carpool line, they should remain in their vehicles, and administrators and staff will hand caps and gowns to them. Administrators also will give cords and / or stoles to those students who should receive them. Guidelines for cap and gown care and wear are available here.

On each student’s self-selected graduation day and time, the graduate and his or her family will enter through the freshman entrance. A high school employee will be there to greet families and to usher them through the building to the auditorium area. If any graduate has items in his or her locker that need to be retrieved, this is the time to do that. This is also the time for graduates to return textbooks and any other school-owned equipment. We must ensure that all families remain at least six feet apart at all times. Once graduates arrive at the entrance of the auditorium, they will be ushered to the stage to walk across and receive their diplomas. Upon exit, graduates will keep their caps and tassels and will return their gowns. Those honor graduates who will be giving graduation speeches will receive separate information from Mrs. Cooley.
Please know that we are committed to host a non-formal celebratory event for the Class of 2020 in July if we have approval from the health department and feel it is safe for our students and families. Safety must be at the forefront of everything we do next week. Please be mindful of the Jefferson County Department of Health guidelines and maintain safe distancing at all times. We are looking forward to seeing our seniors and congratulating them on this milestone.
