ABC Internet Voucher
What is ABC FOR STUDENTS (Alabama Broadband Connectivity)?
This is a program launched by the state of Alabama to help provide high-speed Internet access to students during the COVID-19 pandemic that is forcing many families to connect to school digitally for part or all of the first semester of school. Through this program, the state will send letters to families who were eligible according to our database as of August 10, 2020. Students enrolled as free-lunch and reduced-lunch program and dwell in households earning $48,470 or less for a family of four are automatically eligible. The letter includes a voucher that can be redeemed for Internet services.
The voucher covers the cost of equipment, installation fees, and internet service. This is a better solution for our students than the Kajeet Smartspots that can be checked out from the school. These vouchers can not be combined with other promotions. The voucher can be used once with one internet service provider, to sign up for service for the duration of the program. Enrolled households will not receive any bills and will not be charged any additional fees by the internet service provider. Services will end December 30, 2020 (not 12/31/20). Voucher letters could be received of families as early as Monday, August 24, 2020, for households of qualified students. Letters should be received by August 31, 2020.
Please find a video announcement about this program in English and in Spanish published by the state.
How will you recognize this letter?
The front of the envelope will say: “To the parents of…..” followed by the eligible child’s name. Click here to see a sample of the letter.
What should I do when I receive this letter?
If qualified, the parent needs to do these four things:
- Call an internet provider listed in the voucher letter.
- Say “I have an Alabama ABC voucher.”
- Receive equipment and installation support from your internet provider.
- Connect to the internet for student learning!
Suppose I receive the letter in error?
Then do NOT use the voucher. Only eligible families should use the voucher.
Suppose I checked out a Kajeet Hotspot from the School?
The high-speed Internet service provided through the voucher system is a much better solution to meet the educational needs of your children. The Kajeet Hotspot should be returned to the school once your solution has been set up at your home.
What If I do not receive a letter or have questions?
If you did not receive a letter, contact your school’s Child Nutrition Program Manager first to be sure that you are eligible for this program. If you determine that you are eligible, call ABC for Students Support at 1-888-212-4998 to inform them that you did not receive a letter and that you have confirmed your eligibility. This support team can not assist families in becoming eligible.
