HMS Carpool Changes for Second Semester

December 21, 2021

HMS Families,

Throughout the year, Homewood City Schools routinely assesses and maintains each of our facilities including the pedestrian bridge at HMS. During routine maintenance of the bridge, it was determined that areas of the bridge are in need of repair. Out of an abundance of caution, starting second semester the bridge at HMS will be closed. We understand that this will be an inconvenience to some of our families during dropoff and pickup, but as a school system we want to ensure the safety of all of our students and families.

Starting January 5, traffic flow may be impacted as we transition our carpool procedures. Please give yourself plenty of time at the start of school while we work through these changes.

Please see the carpool updates that will take place on January 5, 2022 (maps included):

  • Morning Walkers and Back of School Carpool - Students who walk in the morning or are dropped off by the pedestrian bridge will still be able to do so. An HCS bus will transport students to HMS at 7:35 am. HMS will have staff at the bus location for supervision starting at 7:15 am. Students should stand under the awning while waiting for the bus. Students must be at the bus location by 7:35 am to be transported to the school. All students must wear a facial covering on the bus as this is a federal order. The bus will travel down Evergreen Ave to Oxmoor Rd onto Palisades Blvd and then Valley Ave. Students riding the bus will be dropped off at the back of HMS.
  • Afternoon Walkers - Students and assigned staff will walk the auxiliary road alongside HMS to the sidewalk. Students will walk past Frisco Street on the Mecca Avenue sidewalk and will meet a Homewood police officer at the intersection of Mecca Avenue and Irving Road. Please note that drivers will not be able to enter Irving Road between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. Students will walk the closed Irving Road to St. Charles Street or Evergreen Avenue. HMS will have additional officers and staff along this route and at intersections to assist with our afternoon walkers. HMS administrators will meet with students prior to dismissal on January 5th to review after school procedures.
  • Afternoon Carpool - Carpool at the front of the school will be adjusted to accommodate the additional volume of cars picking up students. HMS will have an additional police officer to direct cars into three lanes for student carpool outside the gym.

At this time, we do not have a completion date for the bridge repairs. As soon as we have that information, we will share it with our families.

We want to thank the City of Homewood and the Homewood Police Department for their assistance with these changes and their commitment to our students. While closing the bridge during the school year is not ideal, we want to be sure we take every precaution to keep our students, staff, and community safe. We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we transition second semester to these new carpool protocols.

Sincerely,
Dr. Justin Hefner, Superintendent
Homewood City Schools
