Information & Updates from Homewood City Schools

May 21, 2025

Parents and Guardians,

As we conclude another incredible school year, I want to take a moment to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation for your continued partnership and support. This has truly been an outstanding year filled with academic achievement, personal growth, and inspiring moments across all of our schools.

From the first day of class to the last bell, our students have demonstrated resilience, creativity, and a strong commitment to learning. These accomplishments would not be possible without the unwavering dedication of our teachers, staff, and of course, you—the families who support and encourage our students every step of the way.

We’ve seen remarkable progress in academics, celebrated accomplishments in extracurricular programs, and continued to build a school culture grounded in kindness, inclusivity, and community. Together, we’ve fostered an environment where every student is maximizing their unique potential.

As summer begins, I encourage you to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy meaningful moments with your family and friends. Whether it’s a family vacation, a good book, or simply a break from routine, I hope the months ahead bring joy and renewal.

On behalf of the entire district, thank you once again for being such a vital part of our school community. We look forward to welcoming you back for another great year in August.
Wishing you a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable summer!

Dr. Justin Hefner
Superintendent

Summer Chromebook Information

As the school year draws to a close and summer break approaches, we want to provide you with important information regarding student Chromebooks for students in grades 5 and up.

Similar to the holiday break, students in these grades will be bringing their school-issued Chromebooks home for the summer. Students are encouraged to store their Chromebook in a safe location unless it is being used for educational practice or supplemental learning.

Families should be aware that while Homewood City Schools does not monitor student device usage during the summer break, certain website restrictions will remain in place.

  • Websites that are blocked during non-school hours will continue to be blocked throughout the summer.
  • YouTube will be blocked at all times for grades 5-8 during the summer break.
  • Access to social media sites (such as Instagram) and all generative AI tools will be blocked.
  • For students in grades 5-8, internet access on the school-issued Chromebooks will be disabled each evening at 8:00 PM and will be re-enabled each morning at 8:00 AM.
We want to emphasize that there is no expectation of Chromebook use over the summer break.

Homewood Connected created this helpful Family Technology Agreement to help families have conversations about device use and screen time. We encourage you to review this agreement and have a conversation with your child to create a family technology plan that works best for your individual needs and values.

If you have any questions regarding the student Chromebooks, please do not hesitate to contact tvarnado@homewood.k12.al.us.
